It is improbable that more nonsense has been written about aesthetics than about anything else: the literature of the subject is not large enough for that (Clive Bell)

Meyer Schapiro : Conclusion

This is an interesting collection of pictures, mostly of 9th-11th C. illuminations, enhanced with occasionally thought provoking text, though never stepping away from specific details to address the overall effect of any of the artworks mentioned, and never seriously presenting and defending any broad assertions.

Since so much historical art might have been used in this discussion, one might assume that the pieces selected by the author had personal significance to him.

About all one can conclude is the following:

Sometimes pictures have been related to texts.

Sometimes text has appeared in pictures.

And that may be all that can reasonably be said about this subject anyway.
